egyptian he Norfolk Southern Railway Company, commonly referred to as Norfolk Southern (NS), is a major freight railroad operating in the eastern United States. The origins of Norfolk Southern trace back to 1982, when the Southern Railway merged with the Norfolk & Western Railway to form the present-day company. This merger was part of a broader trend of consolidation within the American railroad industry, driven by the need to increase efficiency and profitability in the face of increased competition from trucking. The end-to-end merger of these two storied railroads created a powerful and expansive network, capable of serving a wide variety of markets across the eastern half of the country.

friend7 Norfolk Southern's predecessor railroads have deep historical roots. The Southern Railway was formed in 1894 through the consolidation of nearly 150 smaller railroads, some of which dated back to the early 19th century. The Norfolk & Western Railway, on the other hand, originated in 1881 but incorporated lines that dated back to the 1830s. Both railroads played significant roles in the economic development of the southeastern and midwestern United States, transporting coal, agricultural products, and manufactured goods. The Southern was particularly known for its efficient passenger services and extensive network, while the Norfolk & Western was renowned for its coal transportation and engineering prowess, including the late development of modern steam locomotives.

merger_ad Since its formation, Norfolk Southern has undergone significant expansion and modernization. In 1998, NS acquired a substantial portion of Conrail, a government-created railroad formed from several bankrupt northeastern railroads. This acquisition of mostly former Pennsylvania Railroad lines greatly expanded NS’s network in the northeastern United States, particularly in key markets such as New York, Philadelphia, and Detroit. The Conrail acquisition was a strategic move that provided Norfolk Southern with access to the densely populated and industrially significant regions of the Northeast, complementing its already extensive network in the Southeast and Midwest. Additionally, Norfolk Southern has invested heavily in technology and infrastructure to improve efficiency and safety, including the implementation of positive train control (PTC) systems and extensive track upgrades.

ns2_inset1 A major focus of Norfolk Southern in recent decades has been intermodal transportation, which involves moving freight in containers that can be transferred between ships, trucks, and trains. Intermodal has been one of the fastest-growing segments of the freight industry, and NS has capitalized on this trend by developing extensive intermodal facilities and services. These facilities, often located near major ports and urban centers, allow for the efficient transfer of goods between different modes of transportation, reducing costs and transit times for shippers. In addition to intermodal, Norfolk Southern continues to be a major player in the transportation of bulk commodities such as coal, automotive products, chemicals, and agricultural goods, leveraging its extensive and strategically located network.

ns2_inset2 Today, Norfolk Southern operates approximately 19,500 route miles in 22 states and the District of Columbia, serving every major container port in the eastern United States and providing connections to other rail carriers, short lines, and regional railroads. The company focuses on the transportation of a diverse range of goods, including intermodal containers, coal, automotive products, chemicals, and agricultural commodities. As a key player in the North American freight rail industry, Norfolk Southern continues to adapt to the changing economic landscape while maintaining a strong commitment to safety, environmental sustainability, and customer service.

Shortlines

horse egyptian he following freight railroads in our Shortlines collection maintain interchange connection to the Norfolk Southern's mainline system, or did so previously during the shortline's operating years. A number of the these lines were created through the NS Thoroughbred Shortline Program, which ran from 1988 to 1991. The program offered leasing opportunities for shortline startups on branchlines the NS wanted to trim from its infrastructure. Thoroughbred leases emphasized carloadings over lease payments, allowing successful shortlines to avoid expensive lease payments in exchange for traffic back to NS. Most of these leases allowed for purchase of the line at the end of the term.
