SD60 E Series

orfolk Southern's SD60 rebuild program was a major effort to modernize the road's aging fleet of SD60 locomotives. The SD60 series was originally built by EMD (Electro-Motive Diesel) in the 1980s, and NS purchased 151 units, numbered 6550-6700. To extend the service life of these workhorses and improve performance, Norfolk Southern launched a rebuild program in the 2010s at its Juniata Locomotive Shop in Altoona. The program focused on upgrades that included new computerized control systems, upgraded prime movers (to the 710G3B standard), and improved fuel efficiency and emissions control. The rebuilt locomotives were also equipped with a custom-designed "Crescent" cab, featuring a wide-body design, updated ergonomics, and advanced safety features. NS purchased additional SD60s from Helm Leasing specifically for the SD60E program, with the aim to eventually rebuild 240 SD60s. However, the project was suspended after 135 rebuilds; the remaining inventory of unrebuilt SD60, SD60M and SD60I locomotives were sold or scrapped in 2019.
