ccky_logoChattooga & Chickamauga Railway

ccky_state The Chattooga & Chickamauga Railway is a shortline railroad headquartered in LaFayette, Georgia. It operates 54 miles of trackage, all of which is in Georgia ... except for 1 mile in Chattanooga, Tennessee. From Chattanooga and a Norfolk Southern mainline connection at Shipp Yard, the line travels south through Chickamauga, Rock Spring, LaFayette, Trion, and Summerville, terminating in Berryton. This route is the northernmost portion of the former Central of Georgia mainline between Chattanooga and Newnan, Georgia. It was leased from successor Norfolk Southern in 1989 -- a part of its Thoroughbred Shortline Program -- to CAGY Industries, former holding company of the Columbus & Greenville Railway in Mississippi. Shortline operator Genesee & Wyoming acquired the line and the lease in 2008. Primary commodities handled are chemicals and plastic products. Locomotives are kept at the yard office in LaFayette.

The railroad previously operated 22 miles of former Tennessee, Alabama & Georgia Railway ("the TAG route") from Chattanooga south to Kensington, Georgia. This line was released in 2008 and reverted back to Norfolk Southern. Trackage was partially removed after the closure of a major online customer in Kensington.

LaFayette is the county seat of Walker County and boasts a rich Native American, Civil War and African American history. The city was renamed in 1836 after the Marquis de LaFayette, the French aristocrat who assisted American colonists during the Revolutionary War. The city was incorporated on Sept. 30, 1835. The city owns the historic Chattooga Academy; one of the county’s most cherished landmarks. The structure, completed in 1836, was later renamed John B. Gordon Hall after Confederate Gen. John B. Gordon, who attended the school as a child and also served as governor of Georgia. Gordon Hall is believed to be one of Georgia’s oldest remaining brick school buildings. Confederate Gen. Braxton Bragg made the building his headquarters in September 1863. Bragg sat under an oak tree in front of the school as he planned his attack on Union forces at Chickamauga.

Audia International, a Pennsylvania-based plastics manufacturer that serves the automotive, appliance, construction and packaging markets, decided to expand its existing business to the South and allocated $50 million for investment in a new manufacturing plant. After solidifying a relationship with Genesee & Wyoming’s Pittsburgh& Ohio Central Railroad years before and recognizing its stellar customer service, Audia wanted another Genesee & Wyoming railroad to service the new plant. With the help of Walker County, the State of Georgia, and Genesee & Wyoming’s Chattooga & Chickamauga Railway (CCKY), Audia chose to be the first customer in the Walker County Industrial Park, located in LaFayette, Georgia.
