CaterParrott Railnet "E Line" District |
This line was part of the Central of Georgia’s “E-Line”. The trackage between Machen and Newborn was constructed around 1894 by the Middle Georgia & Atlantic Railway; the trackage between Machen and Madison was constructed by the Macon & Northern Railroad Company in 1891. Both railroads eventually became part of the Central of Georgia Railroad, which became part of the Southern Railway System in 1963 and Norfolk Southern in 1982. Today these two routes combined make up CPR’s Madison Division.

The "E Line" District is what remains of the Central of Georgia's branchline from the Machen intersection to Covington, Georgia. Previously operated by the Great Walton and then Squaw Creek Southern shortlines, under CaterParrott stewardship the line is only in service to Newborn and ordinarily used for railcar storage as there are no active shippers on this route. Norfolk Southern owns the right-of-way through to Covington, but rails only remain on the first 12 miles. At Machen, the trackage is ordinarily used to deposit outbound carloads for Norfolk Southern interchange. Southbound CPR movements work the siding before running locomotives around whatever carloads return north to Madison.

Highway 142 crossings
Between Shady Dale and Newborn, Georgia, the "E Line" District is paralleled by State Highway 142. In addition to several public grade crossings, the line also crosses numerous private roads and driveways, offering glimpses into the Georgia piney woods that characterize this route.
