cg_timetable1910 Just south of Madison, Georgia, the CaterParrott Madison Division passes under Interstate 20 as it heads northward into town across a series of public grade crossings. Milepost 71 at US Highway 278 includes sidings for Flambéau Plastics and Southern States fertilizer. At Dixie Highway, farther north, the line makes a right turn to the northeast before passing under CSX Transportation's former Georgia Railroad mainline between Augusta and Atlanta. After passing underneath, CRP and CSX trackage run in parallel through downtown Madison. CPR maintains a Division office and a small yard off of Jefferson Street. The historic Georgia Railroad depot is located nearby, as is the relocated Central of Georgia depot currently under renovation.

East of downtown and still parallel with the CSX, at North Avenue, CPR serves two adjacent industries in a county industrial complex: JDR Enterprises and Penn Pak. The line continues northeast passing under Highway 441 and leaving the CSX parallel, alongside Lower Apalachee Road. The orignal Central of Georgia line to Athens continued onward from this area, but today out of service after a small section used for railcar storage. Before Morris Road, a branch turns to the southwest passing an International Paper facility and terminating in Georgia Pacific's large Madison Plywood plant. A CSX branch also comes to the mill, making the facility jointly switched by both mainline and shortline. Georgia Pacific is CPR's largest Madison line customer, receiving and supplying boxcars, woodchip hoppers, and spline log cars.

madison_logo Established in 1809, Madison is the seat and the largest town in Morgan County. The early town flourished as a stagecoach stop and an in-town residence for planters' families. Principal streets were patriotically named for presidents and the community prided itself on its schools, literary, and philosophical societies. For the most part, Madison's antebellum architecture survived because Mayor Joshua Hill, a strong Unionist who had resigned his Congressional seat in 1861 to return to Georgia, developed an gentlemen's agreement with General Sherman's detachment. Turn-of-the-century prosperity added a large number of commercial and residential buildings that were Victorian in style. Twentieth century development, formerly insensitive and sprawl-oriented, is now guided to respect the local sense of place and style. Madison values what many communities have lost - an identity and historic integrity.

A Division of Pennington Seed, Penn Pak is a production facility for the Georgia-based lawn, garden, and seed company founded in 1945 in Madison. The Madison facility produces wild birdseed products for retail distribution. Penn Pak regularly receives from CaterParrott Railnet covered hoppers of various seed and grain products, then shipping finished products out by truck. The facility has its own unloading siding, but shares a mainline switch and lead with neighbor shipper JDR Enterprises.

JDR Enterprises receives from CPR regular covered hopper shipments of plastic pellets for the onsite production of various products used in drainage projects in residential, commercial, civil, and transportation markets. The company's corporate office is in Alpharetta, but all manufacturing and shipping take place at the Madison facility.

The largest customer on the Madison Division is Georgia Pacific's Madison Plywood facility, located east of downtown Madison near the junction of U.S. highways 278 and 441. Madison Plywood is jointly switched by CaterParrott Railnet and CSX Transportation, receiving and supplying boxcars, wood chip hoppers, and log racks. CaterParrott crews ordinarily switch the facility on Mondays, Wednesday, and Fridays. Although interchange is possible between CPR and CSX near the plant, all CatorParrott traffic in and out of the plywood facility is interchanged with Norfolk Southern at Machen.
