Folkston Funnel Railfan Park

A front row seat to all the Florida-Georgia mainline traffic

ffrp_state egyptian he Folkston Funnel is a double track section of CSX Transportation mainline in southeast Georgia that serves as the main artery for railroad traffic across the Florida-Georgia state line. From the viewing platform in the Folkston Funnel Railfan Park, visitors can observe dozens of daily trains to and from Jacksonville, Florida, in the south, and a split north of town where trains go west to Waycross, Georgia, and north to Savannah. In addition to numerous CSX freights, six Amtrak trains move through the Funnel each day — including Amtrak's Auto Train, the longest passenger train in the world. Originally a busy Atlantic Coast Line mainline segment, the Funnel passed through Seaboard Coast Line into CSX Transportation. Today the railfan platform features lights, ceiling fans, and a scanner tuned to mainline radio traffic. Adjacent to the platform in the park area are picnic tables, a grill, and a restroom facility for visitors. Trains can also be viewed from the grounds of the restored Folkston ACL depot, just diagonally across the tracks from the platform.

folkston_inset1 Folkston was founded on August 19, 1911. The city was named in honor of William Brandon Folks, M.D., a prominent physician and surgeon in his day. In the years 1925 through 1927, many new and commodious residences were built and several modern brick buildings were erected, including the Citizen Bank Block, the Masonic Temple building, a grammar school building, and a courthouse. Shortly after its creation, the village of Folkston was incorporated as a town government and functioned as a town until 1911 when the area was incorporated as a city. For a number of years, Folkston was the self-proclaimed "Marriage Capital of the World"; Floridians who could not endure their state's waiting period before tying the knot would cross the state line to wed.

With a high percentage of rail traffic headed to Florida passing through Folkston, the rail lines through the city have acquired the nickname "The Folkston Funnel." To provide for a safe viewing situation, the city has built a platform for visitors, along with picnic tables, chairs, barbecue pits, restrooms, grills, and even WiFi. At night, lights shine onto the double track if someone wanted to watch after sunset. Freight trains pass through the Folkston Funnel, and proceed to terminals such as Jacksonville, Tampa, and Miami. Freight trains that originate in Florida take the same routes in opposite direction. In addition, Amtrak trains pass through the Folkston Funnel, they do not stop there. At the covered viewing platform, there is an active scanner running and visitors can listen to train engineers.

folkston_inset2 egyptian olkston's railroad heritage is very important to the people who live here. Recognizing the significance of this aspect of Folkston's history, the City of Folkston has renovated and preserved the old railroad depot which includes the Folkston Railroad Transportation Museum.

Visit the "Cookie" Williams Model Train Room and a one-of-a-kind radio exhibit spanning four decades of radio communication. The museum also contains railroad artifacts such as genuine log books and a model office setting used by dispatchers many years ago. View pictures of logging by rail in the Okefenokee Swamp and numerous other items of railroad history.

The museum is located inside the "Depot" in downtown Folkston. The grounds around the facility are beautifully landscaped with large oak trees, benches, and a covered pavilion. We encourage you to visit Folkston and see the railroad history displayed in the Folkston Railroad Transportation Museum.

egyptian olkston is where the majority of train traffic for Florida passes. All of CSX’s trains moving in and out of Florida (except the few trains that go west) must pass through the Funnel. It is known to railfans as the Folkston Funnel. The Folkston Funnel is located at MP 602.2 on the Nahunta Subdivision of CSX's Jacksonville Division. At this point, the Jesup Subdivision joins the Nahunta Sub. From this point south it is double track main line to Jacksonville FL. Heading north from here, trains head to Savannah. This is the Nahunta Sub, and it handles traffic from Savannah GA and the Northeast. From the split going northwest, trains head up to Waycross and then Atlanta. This is the Jesup Sub, and handles traffic to/from Waycross GA and the Mid-west. The actual interchange for the split is just north of the viewing platform. Just south of the viewing platform is a 2700 foot long passing siding. All three lines are double tracked, and you can see about 40 to 45 trains a day, down from about 50 with operational changes made in 2017. Trains are generally longer tho to make up for some of this. One of the changes included combining the Tropicana Juice Trains with some of the regularly scheduled intermodal trains — no more separate Juice Trains.
