Rigolets Pass, La / Aug 2025 / Louisiana Rails
naugurated in August of 2025, Amtrak's Mardi Gras Service is a twice-daily regional passenger train between New Orleans, Louisiana, and Mobile, Alabama. The service makes stops at four stations along the Mississippi Gulf Coast: Bay Saint Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula. Typical equipment for the operation includes two or three coaches and a cafe/lounge car, bracketed by motive power on both ends. As there are no turning facilities in Mobile, trains simply reverse direction back to New Orleans. Numbered 23/25 (westbound) and 24/26 (eastbound), the service offers two round-trips a day. Ordinarily, the eastbound and westbound sections pass each other near Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi. Passengers arriving at New Orleans Union Passenger Terminal can make connections to the three major routes that terminate there: the Crescent, the City of New Orleans, and the Sunset Limited. Mardi Gras operations are partially funded by the states of Louisiana and Mississippi, as well as the City of Mobile.
The Mardi Gras Service traverses the former Gulf Coast mainline of the Louisville & Nashville Railroad, now operated by CSX Transportation. East of the New Orleans city limits, the route is remote and scenic: passing through brackish marshlands that separate Lake Pontchartrain from Lake Borgne and the Gulf of Mexico. Once in Mississippi, the route is much more populated and lies inland from the Gulf shore all the way to Mobile, Alabama. Along the entire route, the mainline crosses a number of major waterways on a variety of bridges, including the impressive 4555 feet trestle across the Rigolets tidal strait, east of New Orleans. Mardi Gras trains share the active mainline with CSX freights, as New Orleans is the Class One's major southwestern terminal.
Louisville & Nashville operated a number of named and local passenger trains along this corridor prior to the creation of Amtrak, including the Azalean (Cincinnati – New Orleans), the Humming Bird (Cincinnati – New Orleans), the Piedmont Limited (New York - New Orleans) and the Gulf Wind (New Orleans - Jacksonville). The pre-Amtrak version of the Crescent also operated on the Mobile - New Orleans segment. Various locals and commuter trains also plied the route in the heyday of mainline passenger service.
Amtrak operated three iterations of passenger service on this corridor before the current Mardi Gras Service. From 1984-85, the Gulf Coast Limited offered daily passenger service between New Orleans and Mobile. This train was developed in conjunction with the 1984 World's Fair held in New Orleans, but ended due to state funding issues. The operation was later resumed for only a year, 1996-97, but again state funding was not continued. Meanwhile, in 1993, Amtrak extended the Sunset Limited route from New Orleans to Florida, thereby providing service to the stations on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. That extension continued until Hurricane Katrina in 2005, when the Sunset was cut back to its original terminus in New Orleans.

ArticleMardi Gras service is off to a fast start, Amtrak says
December 4, 2025
NEW ORLEANS – Ridership on Amtrak’s Mardi Gras service — launched in August to link New Orleans and Mobile, Ala. — has exceeded expectations in its first three-plus months of operation along the Gulf Coast.
Amtrak on Thursday said that more than 46,000 passengers have ridden the twice-daily roundtrips since the long-awaited service launched using a combination of CSX, Norfolk Southern, and New Orleans Public Belt Railroad trackage.
“We are well on-track to double the original estimate,” Amtrak Board Chairman Anthony Coscia said in a statement. “Demand is very high across our network.”
Amtrak Executive Vice President Jennifer Mitchell said the communities along the route have embraced the service faster than predicted. “Amtrak is proud of what we’ve achieved with local partners in Louisiana, Mississippi, and Alabama,” she said in a statement.
Strong support has also come from three regional tourism agencies and the Southern Rail Commission, Amtrak noted.
The trains rank at the top of all Amtrak services in customer satisfaction scores, which Amtrak attributes to work by its train, engine, on-board, and maintenance teams. Some 96% of customers said they were “extremely satisfied” with their trips.
Customer on-time performance to date is 86%, which is one of the best rates in the Amtrak system. When trains are delayed, nearly 90% of passengers said they were still “extremely satisfied” with the Amtrak experience.
In 108 days of service, an average of more than 420 people daily rode the Mardi Gras trains.

Rigolets Pass, La / Sep 1984 / Michael Palmieri
The Rigolets is a 8-mile-long (13 km) deepwater tidal strait in Louisiana. "Rigolets" comes from the word rigole, French for 'trench' or 'gutter'. The name is now locally pronounced "RIG-uh-leez".
The strait follows a generally eastward course to Lake Borgne, a lagoon in the Gulf of Mexico, and finally to the Gulf of Mexico. Along with nearby Chef Menteur Pass, the Rigolets connects Lake Pontchartrain and Lake St. Catherine in Louisiana to Lake Borgne, and then to the Gulf of Mexico. It forms the boundary between New Orleans (Orleans Parish) and St. Tammany Parish.
As a deepwater tidal pass, the Rigolets helps supply salt water from the Gulf to Lake Pontchartrain. Tidal scouring has produced a deep pit in the lake at the western mouth of the strait.
The Rigolets is spanned by two bridges. The western terminus of the U.S. Route 90 Rigolets Bridge is located immediately north of Fort Pike. It was damaged by Hurricane Katrina in August 2005, and required major repairs. Farther south, CSX Transportation crosses the Rigolets on a 4,555-ft railroad bridge. Hurricane damage there from Katrina included shifted spans and the loss of timber decking.

ocated southwest of downtown and just a few blocks from the shore of the Mississippi Sound, the Amtrak station consists of a concrete platform and open air shelter adjacent to the former Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N) depot, an exuberant Spanish Revival building constructed in 1929. This historic structure, restored by the city in the 1990s, now houses the Hancock County Tourism Bureau, the Bay Saint Louis Cultural Affairs Office, Mardi Gras Museum, Alice Moseley Folk Art Museum and the Depot Visitors Center.
Fronting the depot to the south is a park boasting walking paths lined with benches, pavilions used for concerts and events, and palms and other mature trees that offer welcome shade during the warmer months.
Amtrak restored passenger rail service to Bay Saint Louis via the Amtrak Mardi Gras Service (New Orleans-Mobile, Ala.) on August 18, 2025. The service name references the long history of Mardi Gras celebrations in New Orleans, Mobile and the communities of coastal Mississippi. Amtrak operates this service under contracts with the states of Louisiana and Mississippi, financial support by the City of Mobile and with the long-time backing of the Southern Rail Commission, an interstate compact working on behalf of the states of Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama. Grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation support operating expenses for this route and are funding improvements for freight and Amtrak trains.

ay Saint Louis is located in Hancock County, in southeastern Mississippi, U.S. It lies along the Mississippi Sound (an embayment of the Gulf of Mexico) at the entrance to St. Louis Bay (named in 1699 for King Louis IX of France), 58 miles (93 km) northeast of New Orleans, Louisiana. The site was part of a 1789 Spanish land grant to Thomas Shields. The village soon became a resort for wealthy planters and, later, for tourists who arrived after the New Orleans, Mobile and Chattanooga Railroad was completed in 1872.
The town was incorporated as Shieldsborough in 1818 and as the city of Bay Saint Louis in 1875. In 1814, during the War of 1812, the bay was the scene of the naval engagement against the British known as the Battle of Bay.
In the late 20th century, casino gambling fueled the growth of the city, significantly increasing tourism’s importance to the local economy. Bay Saint Louis, along with most of Hancock county, sustained severe storm damage in 2005 from Hurricane Katrina; The neighboring city of Waveland was suffered catastrophic destruction. The John C. Stennis Space Center of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is about 15 miles west of the city. The City of Bay St. Louis is a vibrant community with many family oriented art, dining and entertainment venues.

ocated downtown about a half mile north of the Mississippi Sound, the Gulfport station provides access to key attractions in the state’s second most populous city, including the Mississippi Aquarium, white sand beaches and expansive Jones Park. Coast Transit Authority bus routes pass within a few blocks of the station.
The Amtrak station consists of a platform on the north side of the former Union Station, which opened in 1904 to serve the Louisville and Nashville Railroad (L&N) and Gulf and Ship Island Railroad (G&SI). Built where the two railroads crossed – the L&N traveling east/west and the G&SI north/south – the one-story red brick depot takes the form of an “L”. The southern wing originally housed a baggage room and space for the Southern Express Company – indicated by the large doors that allowed workers to move carts laden with packages between trains and the depot. The other wing held a lunchroom and storage area.
Where the two wings meet at the crossing, the location of the passenger waiting rooms, the facade curves gently and features a parapet and balustrades – an elegant touch that highlights the entryway at ground level. As built, the depot had platforms serving both tracks; the overhanging roof formed deep eaves supported by large brackets that would have offered travelers protection from the sun and inclement weather.
The depot remained in active use by the L&N through April 30, 1971, when the Pan-American (Cincinnati-New Orleans) made its last run. With the start of Amtrak operations the following day, May 1, the new passenger rail service provider decided not to include this coastal route in its network map. Today, the building houses the Gulfport Museum of History.

acing south (above) on the Illinois Central Gulf (former Gulf & Ship Island) towards the Port of Gulfport, just south of the ICG yard. The ICG crossed the Louisville & Nashville's line from New Orleans to Mobile at the northwest corner of the depot. The station was built as a joint venture between the two railroads in 1903. Passenger service on the IC between Gulfport and Jackson, Mississippi ended on 17 November 1950; but up until the end there had been a Gulfport-Chicago sleeper which was handled by the Panama Limited north of Jackson. The L&N bought out the IC's interest in the building in 1960, L&N passenger service ended with the advent of Amtrak in 1971, and the railroad closed the agency in 1982. — Michael Palmieri

he Amtrak station consists of a platform on the block bounded by Caillavet and Reynoir Streets south of the CSX railroad tracks. Since the 1870s, this site has hosted at least three depots, all of which are now gone. It’s about a half-mile north of the Mississippi Sound, which in that area is lined with casinos. Keesler Federal Park, home of the Biloxi Shuckers baseball team, can also be reached within 10 minutes on foot, as can the Biloxi Transit Center, which is served by intercity and local Coast Transit Authority buses. For those arriving or departing by car, the station is easily accessible from Interstate 110 or coastal Highway 90.

uring the course of Biloxi’s history, eight flags have flown over her and the Mississippi Gulf Coast. These flags included the flags of six countries: France, England, Spain, the Republic of West Florida, Confederate States of America, and the United States stars and stripes. The other two flags were state flags: the Magnolia State Flag and the current Mississippi State flag.
In 1872 the L&N Railroad established the Seashore Camp Ground in Biloxi as a flag stop. In 1881 Lopez, Elmer and Company became the first seafood cannery in Biloxi and by the end of the decade four additional canneries were established. In 1888 the schooner races of the White Wing Queens began and lasted until 1933.
By the turn of the century Biloxi had become the Seafood Capital of the World. In the 1920s there were more than 40 seafood factories occupying the two cannery districts.

he current L&N passenger depot, on the southside of the tracks, dates to this merger year; a separate freight building was located across the tracks. Within a decade, the railroad also would landscape part of the adjacent right of way as a park that included walking paths, a fountain and a bandstand.
The passenger depot replaced an earlier one that was likely in the same area. Built to a standard design found in other cities served by the L&N, the current one-story wood frame building on a brick foundation is topped with a gable-on-hip roof punctuated by cross gables and gabled dormers with decorative finials. Deep eaves supported by large brackets protected customers from sun and inclement weather as they waited to board the train.
The exterior walls are covered in siding: the wainscot and frieze – the bottom and top fourths of the surface, respectively, have vertical beadboard – while the center half employs horizontal clapboard. This center band contains all the windows, many of which are in pairs. The clapboard and trim in the center section run around the structure, connecting the windows’ sills and lintels, emphasizing the depot’s horizontal orientation. Trackside, a projecting bay allowed the station manager to monitor activity along the platform and tracks.
Built during a time of widespread segregation in the United States, the depot had separate waiting rooms for use by white and African American passengers. They were physically separated by the railroad agent’s office and had separate entries to and from the street and platform. As built, from east to west, the depot included: the general waiting room, agent’s office, African American waiting room and baggage room. In 1918, the L&N added onto the building, resulting in the expansion of the two waiting rooms.

he Amtrak station, consisting of a platform, is located downtown and across from Cooper Riverside Park overlooking the Mobile River. Within a short walk, one may reach the convention center to the north, the National Maritime Museum of the Gulf and the Alabama Cruise Terminal to the south, and Fort Condé to the west. Numerous Wave bus routes operate within a few blocks of the station, as does the moda! circulator that makes a loop through downtown, serving hotels, government agencies, shopping, entertainment venues and historic sites. The station is also easily accessible from Interstate 10.
The platform sits in the area formerly occupied by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad (L&N) depot, which was damaged by Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and demolished two years later. It featured a strong horizontal massing in buff brick punctuated by a vertical pavilion with decorative stone-faced elements bearing the “L&N” logo. Opened in 1956, the facility replaced an earlier station on the site, and it was used by Amtrak when it variously operated service to Mobile.

obile is located on the northwest corner of Mobile Bay, which receives the waters of the Mobile, Spanish, Tensaw, Apalachee and Blakeley rivers. The area where these five watercourses meet and intermingle is known as the Mobile-Tensaw River Delta. Dotted with islands, open water, marshes, swamps and forests, the delta extends northward for some 250,000 acres. Along its stretches, visitors encounter more than 300 species of birds, otters, turtles, alligators and other wildlife, as well as dazzling flora. The delta also provides ample opportunities for exploration and recreation. About 20 miles south of the city, the bay meets the Mississippi Sound, separated from the Gulf of America by a chain of barrier islands.
