We are excited about the huge opportunity in Harrison County. It has taken a lot of work to formulate the agreements and relationships needed to restore this service. Our core customer service values and determination are going to bring a new level of service to the area. We look forward to working with the existing businesses and helping to recruit new opportunities to Harrison County.

Robert Riley - CEO Chicago Rock Island & Pacific Railroad LLC

gsi_state egyptian he current Gulf & Ship Island Railroad LLC is a shortline operation in Gulfport, Mississippi, and a subsidiary of Mississippi-based shortline operator Rock Island Rail. The GSI operation began in 2020, a partnership with Harrison County (Mississippi) Development Commission to resume switching operations on the Seaway Lead serving the Bernard Bayou industrial park in Gulfport. The shortline interchanges with Kansas City Southern, which operates the historic Gulf & Ship Island mainline from the coast to Hattiesburg (former MidSouth < Illinois Central Gulf < Illinois Central), with trackage rights over Canadian National to Jackson. From the KCS interchange just south of the Highway 49 cloverleaf on Interstate 10, the industrial park line runs east and parallels Seaway Road for several miles. Principal commodities handled include steel, gypsum wallboard, lumber and other building materials, asphalt, aggregates, industrial chemicals, utility poles, plastics and general merchandise freight.

Owner Rock Island Rail has made a reputation for reviving historic railroad names and paint schemes, and the Seaway operation is no exception. The name Gulf & Ship Island honors Gulfport as the base of operations for the original GSI, later absorbed by the Illinois Central. Locomotives in the Rock Island fleet are painted in attractive liveries honoring the historic fallen flag.

Harrison County celebrates significant growth, return of rail service at industrial park

December 2021

wlox_inset The Harrison County Development Commission held a celebration of the year’s success and the significant growth seen at the Industrial Park.

“We’ve got a lot of things happening and a lot of growth,” said John “Shorty” Sneed, retiring commission board member.

Sneed is retiring from the Harrison County Development Commission after 16 years. He is happy to toot the commission’s horn about the work it has done since Hurricane Katrina, including the park’s latest addition: rail service, which was marked by a unique ribbon-cutting on Wednesday.

“Just always thought we were a second-class industrial park without rail service and I think a lot of the tenants agreed. We have about 15 tenants that are planning on using it, and three or four already using it,” Sneed said.

The park has been without rail service for more than six years after the rail line to the park became inoperable. The Harrison County Development Commission teamed up with Rock Island Rail and got it back online this spring.

The director said having the rail service will make a big difference.

“We’ve got customers now who have never used rail before. We’ve got customers who have been using rail in the past that are really glad it’s coming back, and we’ve got new customers that are coming to town talking about doing business with us because the rail is here,” said commission director Bill Lavers.

Lavers didn’t reserve his accolades solely for the rail service.

“We’re celebrating a lot of things. We’re celebrating a new street in the industrial park, the first street since 1989 that’s been built in this industrial park,” Lavers said.

Even better, five of the six lots on the street have already been sold.

hcdc_logo When Lavers arrived four years ago, there were 200 available acres in the Intraplex Industrial Park. Now there’s only 40 left, and they’ve done it with small to medium companies.

“You know everyone thinks you should have a Toyota or a Nissan plant every time you recruit a company,” Sneed said. “Those things come few and far between. We’ve got a good mixture of people here.”

“We’re adding in, and we’ve got a lot of demand,” Lavers said. “We’ve got a lot of people coming and looking. We had three people from out of state and out of town on Tuesday to look around, so we’re active.”

Lavers said he is excited about rail service returning to the park in Gulfport as well as work going on in Long Beach.

“We’re active not only in Gulfport but in Long Beach and all of Harrison County,” Lavers said. “If you want to bring your business to Harrison County, I’m your guy, so look me up and call me.”

Rock Island Rail isn’t just running the train; it is also joining the commission in actively recruiting businesses to the park to take advantage of the new service.

“Well, we haven’t been here very long, but the business is growing, though, very quickly, and we have lots of potential business that is here. We’ve got one customer who has started loading cars here and we’ve got another customer unloading cars, a lot of cars here, and they’re going to grow their business as well now that we’re here,” said Reid Dawe, general manager of Rock Island Rail.

A train ride made for a unique treat for those in attendance Wednesday.

“I’m just tickled to death that we have a railroad back at Harrison County Industrial Park,” Sneed said.

The EMD GP15-1 is a 4-axle diesel-electric locomotive built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division between June 1976 and March 1982. Intended to provide an alternative to the rebuilding programs that many railroads were applying to their early road switchers, it is generally employed as a yard switcher or light road switcher. This locomotive is powered by a 12-cylinder EMD 645E engine, which generates 1,500 hp (1,119 kW). The GP15-1 uses a 50-foot-9-inch (15.47 m) frame, has a wheelbase of 29 ft 9 in (9.07 m) and has a length over couplers of 54 ft 11 in (16.74 m). A total of 310 units were built for American railroads. A number of GP15-1s remain in service today for yard work and light road duty. The radiator section is similar to those found on the EMD SD40T-2 and EMD SD45T-2 "tunnel motors," leading some observers to incorrectly identify the units as such or as GP15Ts, and giving them the nickname "baby tunnel motors".

caboose_inset I've heard it said that we Southerners invented Nostalgia. That may or may not be, but Lord knows I freely dabble in the art when it comes to Deep South railroading. So how pleased was I when I heard that Robert Riley was reviving the Gulf & Ship Island name for the Reborn Blue's industrial park operation on the Mississippi Coast. Marvelous! And then the nostalgia really kicked in when I saw online that he had procured a former MidSouth Rail wide vision caboose. These cabs rolled through the landscape of my childhood railfanning wearing their original orange and black for owner Illinois Central Gulf. The 199500 series were everywhere in those days. Regional MidSouth picked up a handful of them in the spinoff, and they looked great dressed up in their corporate gray with the green stripe. I caught sister to Robert's caboose #1605 in Meridian back in the day (pictured here). Bringing his #1606 onto the Seaway lead is yet another nod to this region's rail heritage, as MidSouth got the Gulfport section of the GSI main from ICG. She's perfect for Gulfport. The high cupola. The boxy look. Those porches you could throw parties on. Marvelous!
