cspp_logo typewriter hroughout the history of live steam railroading, scale steam locomotives have comprised the majority of locomotives being built by hobbyists. The greatest asset of the live steam hobby is the acquired knowledge of all its members. The sharing of this knowledge, friendship, and the community surrounding the hobby are what make it so very important and enjoyable to those who participate. The CSP&P Railway was incorporated for educational purposes and to expand general knowledge of the important role that railroads have played in our lives and history.

Canton, St. Paul & Pacific Railway

cspp_state egyptian he Canton, St. Paul & Pacific Railway is a large 7.5 inch gauge live steam railroad located near the Etowah River in Canton, Georgia, north of Atlanta. The scenic mainline — nine tenths of an actual mile long with grades as steep as 2% — was built entirely by hand by volunteers, completed in 2006. The 4500' single-track route traverses twelve acres of forest and features 3 long tunnels, 2 bridges, 7 passing sidings, numerous structures and sidetracks, and an electronic signal and block detection system permitting bi-directional running by many trains. The base of the out-and-back operation is an 18-stall roundhouse and turntable for prepping and maintaining live steam locomotives. Members and guests bring a variety of motive power and rolling stock to the railroad for operating sessions, and several car barns have been built for onsite storage. The entire property is adjacent to the Georgia Northeastern Railroad mainline from Marietta to Tate, Georgia, with connection to the Blue Ridge Scenic Railway tourist operation. This route was once the Louisville & Nashville mainline to Atlanta. Visitation to the Canton, St. Paul & Pacific is by invitation only.

cspp_snapshot1 Every Canton, St. Paul & Pacific Railway operating session brings a different assortment of locomotives and rolling stock to the line for operation. MiniAcres Railroad #1, featured below, was one of several operating during our May 2025 visit and one of dozens to operate over the railroad in a season. Even so, HawkinsRails fell in love with her almost immediately. My dad used to say that certain steam locomotives just look like a steam locomotive is supposed to look. I'd say Number One checks that box. Clean lines, trim drivers, good proportions ... and dressed up like a class act. When her builder and engineer invited Ella and me to take the only two seats in his riding car for the next run out and back, we jumped at the welcome. With a hundred pounds of steam in her boiler, brightly painted #1 tackled the CStP&P mainline like a champ — despite some wet rails from a little morning rain. You'll not hear a crisper stack talk than Mike's little Prairie, and the smell of a wood burner making steam is hard to beat. Not every day you ride behind a machine of which you actually want to be downwind. Think: campfire on wheels. It was a fine ride up and over the mountain. And guess what? It was also my Ella's first transportation behind a scale-riding live steamer. Countless electrics and gasolines; first steam. I suppose that's just about perfect, seeing as she's Number One.

Canton, Georgia - May 17, 2025 — Ella and I took a ride around the complete CStP&P mainline behind 7.5" gauge 2-6-2 MiniAcres Railroad #1, one of two wood-burning Prairies built by Mike Bumgardner. The kettle features an electric headlamp, a home-built spark arrestor, and a custom numberplate on the smokebox.
