rtex4996_inset1 Someone could take issue with my application of our "Rare Bird" tag to Rail Trusts Equipment #4996. After all, isn't the Geep Thirty-eight one of North America's ubiquitous models? For sure. But consider this: This sixty year old rolled out of LaGrange in 1966 — the first year of 38 production. And she was one of only 8 of the new model purchased by Henry Ford's regional DT&I hauler: a small class. And she got around: Grand Trunk, Louisville & Nashville (lease), Canadian National, etc. And not a Dash-2, either ... although I'm sure a lot of parts have been added and upgraded over the years. Still, I bet there are a few pre solid-state components still hanging on under her hood. Only 700 of the original 38s were constructed before an amazing 2,200 upgraded versions hit the rails from 1972 on. A Straight 8 from year one in such a small class, still racking up the hours in 2025, enjoying retirement on the coast. Let's call her a Rare Bird, just for kicks.
