The railroad shifted over the years from older secondhand Geeps to newer-but-used four-axle power. Then it made a big switch to six-axle power that became available during the Great Recession, Parks says. Today, the line stables 20 locomotives, including seven wide-nosed GP40-2s of Canadian National heritage, 12 SD40-3s of various lineages, and one slug. The six-axle units are especially useful on frequent, short, steep grades, and their Spartan cabs give them great crew visibility during switching. Their pulling power is unmatched. “With the six-axle units, two of them can do the work of four GPs,” Dale Parks says. You’ll find all of the locomotives neatly attired in the company’s green, cream, and magenta paint scheme.

The current Aberdeen, Carolina & Western diesel locomotive roster consists of four models of motive power, three of which have Canadian origins:

Four 4-axle GP40-2 road switchers built by General Motors Diesel of Canada with "Canadian" wide cabs: 1 started with Canada's GO Transit and the others started with Canadian National. The former CN units bear their original road numbers but sport a ACWR green paint scheme.

Nine 6-axle SD40-3 road switchers built by General Motors Diesel of Canada with standard Spartan cabs, all built in the early 1970s, and all rebuilt from SD40's to Dash 3 components. All started as Canadian National units, but came to ACWR via the Wisconsin Central and still bear WC road numbers. Most wear the latest green/cream ACWR paint scheme.

Fifteen 6-axle SD60F road units also built by General Motors Diesel of Canada with wide cabs and cowl covered bodies, all built in 1989 for Canadian National and still bear CN road numbers. Most have red cabs and black/white body striping.

Five MP15 heavy yard switchers built by Electro Motive Division, most from a 1975 production run. One uses DC transmission; the others are AC equipped. All are former Union Pacific units and still bear UP colors and road names. Two are ex Missouri Pacific and three are ex Southern Pacific.
