All Day Trip to Petersburg
From May to October, we offer an 8-hour trip to Petersburg on the last Saturday of the month. During this trip, you’ll have a layover in Petersburg where you get to explore the quaint town and enjoy the unique shops and restaurants offered there. Passengers go through the 6-mile Trough, where eagles almost always await train visitors. Sometimes passengers see one eagle, and then other trips provide visitors with the chance to see several. It’s not a guarantee to see America’s greatest symbol on the Potomac Eagle, but it’s a pretty good bet that passengers will see at least one. It’s almost as if they come out on cue to perform in all their spectacular style.

Since 1991, Potomac Eagle has operated scenic rail excursions through the South Branch Valley of West Virginia. In addition to the beautiful scenery and rich history, passengers can enjoy the opportunity to see American bald eagles. Because of the clean water, tall trees, and breathtaking environment, the South Branch makes a perfect home for these birds. As you roll through the valley, you’ll be able to view these birds in their natural habitat. These majestic creatures are easy to spot with their distinctive white head and tail features, and yellow beak and feet.

The South Branch Potomac River has its headwaters in northwestern Highland County, Virginia, near Hightown along the eastern edge of the Allegheny Front. After a river distance of 139 miles, the mouth of the South Branch lies east of Green Spring in Hampshire County, West Virginia, where it meets the North Branch Potomac River to form the Potomac.
The Native Americans of the region, and thus the earliest white settlers, referred to the South Branch Potomac River as the Wappatomaka. Variants throughout the river's history included Wappatomica River, Wapacomo River, Wapocomo River, Wappacoma River, Wappatomaka River, South Branch of Potowmac River, and South Fork Potomac River. Places settled in the South Branch valley bearing variants of "Wappatomaka" include Wappocomo farm built in 1774 and the unincorporated hamlet of Wappocomo (sometimes spelled Wapocomo) at Hanging Rocks, both north of Romney on West Virginia Route 28.
