tag_quote

german esidents originally called the city "Seven-Nine" or "Old 79" because of its close proximity to Savannah, approximately 79 miles away. Settled in 1835, the town was also known as Millen’s Junction after McPherson B. Millen, superintendent of the Central of Georgia Railway, which connected with the Georgia Railroad in the town. Millen’s Junction was destroyed in the Civil War due to the railroad and the presence of a Confederate prison camp – Camp Lawton – located just outside the town on land that is now part of Magnolia Springs State Park. Hardy residents rebuilt the town after the war.

Millen, Georgia

ofdm_state egyptian he Olde Freight Depot Museum occupies the former Central of Georgia Railroad freight house in downtown Millen, Georgia, northwest of Savannah. The building is a beautifully restored example of a freight depot design used by the Central around the state. Next to the museum is a train-viewing platform, allowing visitors to watch the adjacent Norfolk Southern mainline at its Augusta Junction. Here the former Central mainline from Savannah splits, with the main continuing west to Macon and a secondary route going north to Augusta. The former Central passenger depot, situated within the diverging mainlines, is closed to the public. Norfolk Southern maintains nearby a district office and a small yard. At the other end of the freight depot is a small park where a Southern Railway bay window caboose is on display.
