Gulf, Mobile & Ohio Steam Locomotives |
collection
The Gulf, Mobile & Ohio was formed in 1940 and as such inherited from its constituent railroads all of its steam locomotive power. The new system purchased no new steam during World War II. When in 1947, following the War, the Rebel Route expanded into Chicago by purchasing the Alton Railroad, the larger system moved quickly to shed all of its aging steam and dieselize its motive power. Fires dropped for good on the GM&O in October of 1949. Below is a small sampling of GM&O steam, plus samples of kettles in our collection from predecessors Gulf Mobile & Northern and the Mobile & Ohio that survived into the GM&O merger.
