Savannah & Atlanta #750Old Seven-and-a-Half / The Queen of Georgia Steam |
avannah & Atlanta Pacific #750 is still owned by the Atlanta Chapter NRHS, and through the 'seventies, she was leased to the Southern Railway for service on the steam specials. Her modest muscle compelled her to doublehead on the heavier trains, but once in awhile, she would kick up her heels when she ran alone ... such as the 1974 edition of the Atlanta Chapter's Dogwood Special to Toccoa, Georgia. High point of the trip: frmo a dead stop, barking up the twelve miles of 1% grade from Toccoa to Mt. Airy with nine heavyweight cars and the extra water tank on her drawbar.
Weekend Steam: 25 Years of Southern Steam Excursions, 1992
n 1910, the American Locomotive Company built a handsome 4-6-2 light Pacific, one of several in an order from the Florida East Coast Railroad. After a quarter century hauling passengers up and down the eastern coast of Florida, including their Key West extension, FEC #80 found a second life as one of three Pacific sold to shortline Savannah & Atlanta. As their renumbered #750, she moved passenger trains between port city Savannah northwest to Canack, Georgia, and a connection with the Georgia Railroad's mainline to Atlanta. In 1962, the president of the Savannah & Atlanta, Charles E. Gay, donated the Pacific to the Atlanta Chapter of the National Railway Historical Society. Nicknamed "Old Seven-and-a-Half" during her excursion years, in 1964 #750 powered the first public steam excursion on the dieselized Southern Railway. Over the three decades that followed, she was a frequent headliner in Graham Claytor's steam excursion program. The locomotive starred in the 1984 movie Biloxi Blues. Currently #750 is out of service, but is cosmetically restored and permanently displayed under roof at the Southeastern Railway Museum in Duluth, Georgia.

Savannah & Atlanta's lone surviving Pacific type may not have been the strongest horse in the Southern excursion stable, but she may just have been one the of the classiest. My father would have said that she "looked like a steam locomotive should look," with good lines and that all-American appeal. The brass eagle perched on the boiler-front headlight was a classy touch, one I could appreciate even as a kid. My first exposure to #750 was a 1983 NRHS-sponsored excursion out of New Orleans up to Hattiesburg, Mississippi, and return. We arrived early Saturday morning at NOUPT and found 750 at the far end of the platforms, being prepped for the day's trip ahead. I remember thinking that she was on the small side for such a long line of well-worn heavyweight excursion equipment. But I was not complaining, and the day proved to be as marvelous as all those Hattiesburg runs turned out to be in the 1980s. I did not ever see her run again after that trip, but our paths would cross again a few more time in storage or on static display -- including a visit to the museum in Duluth, Georgia, in the late 1990s, when and where she sported a fresh coat of paint and was under the protection of a museum roof.
