Texas South-Eastern Railroad Company"The Neches Valley Route" |
The Texas South-Eastern is one of three short line railroads remaining from the boom period of the East Texas lumber industry. This can be attributed to the policy of the parent organization, now Temple-Inland, Incorporated, which practiced sustained cutting of timber and to the development of ancillary industries at Diboll.
Incorporated in 1900 and a common carrier by 1908, the current Texas South-Eastern Railroad Company provides switching and interchange services at Diboll and Lufkin, Texas. It previously operated the 10 miles of trackage between those municipalities, but now limits itself to industrial switching. A 7-mile segment of track between Blix and Vair was also previously operated but was abandoned in 1978. Furthermore, between 1962 and 1969, the shortline leased the Texas State Railroad from Palestine to Rusk, before that operation became a state-run tourist railroad. Traffic remains lumber and forest products, and an enginehouse is located at Diboll. The company is owned by Temple-Inland, now a wholly-owned subsidiary of International Paper.
