Each day, [the] locomotives navigate 16 miles of rail tracks as they haul freight to and from some of the largest employers in Lawrence County. The spider-web network of tracks encircles New Castle, feeding into two major rail lines that provide access to markets throughout North America. Scrap steel, aggregate, salt, plastics, and more recently sand (a result of hydraulic fracturing), are among the many commodities shipped and loaded onto trucks every day, thanks to what Dale Berkley Jr. calls "the best-kept secret in New Castle."

The short line's charge is hauling freight to customers off the main railways, Berkley says. Since New Castle Industrial can connect with both major carriers – Norfolk Southern and CSX – it gives its customers pricing advantages. "We're an extension of the two major railroads," he says, "and having access to the two helps the customer, since the railroads have to bid for their business."

Transloading

icon_wikipedia

Transloading is the process of transferring a shipment from one mode of transportation to another. It is most commonly employed when one mode cannot be used for the entire trip, such as when goods must be shipped internationally from one inland point to another. Such a trip might require transport by truck to an airport, then by airplane overseas, and then by another truck to its destination; or it might involve bulk material (such as coal) loaded to rail at the mine and then transferred to a ship at a port. Transloading is also required at railroad break-of-gauge points, since the equipment between lines is not compatible.

Wikipedia

The New Castle Industrial Railroad regularly switches a transloading area located in central New Castle along the shortline's primary line out to a Norfolk Southern interchange. Switched transloaded materials include covered hoppers of sand for the hydraulic fracturing process, covered hoppers of salt for winter highway maintenance, and tank cars of liquid products.
