Cordele-Crisp County offers the best of all worlds. Cordele has all of the "small town" charm you hope to find in a South Georgia community. Comfortable neighborhoods with shade-covered drive, Victorian and Federal-style homes, and an active downtown district are only a few of the amenities that make Cordele an ideal place to live. Cordele has retained its agricultural roots, and this important economic sector continues to play a large role on its success today. As the "Watermelon Capital of the World," Cordele is vibrant during the summer as the watermelon crop is harvested and shipped nationwide. The community's annual Watermelon Festival is just one reason to visit the community.

tag_closeup Triple Diamonds

crp_leader2 egyptian nown as the "Gateway to the South Georgia," the city of Cordele has a long history with railroads. Incorporated in 1888, it is named for Cordelia Hawkins, eldest daughter of Colonel Samuel Hawkins, the president of the Savannah, Americus and Montgomery Railway. Much that railroad's mainline (later Seaboard Air Line) survives today as the Heart of Georgia. Two class 1 mainlines also pass through Cordele: Norfolk Southern's line from Macon to Valdosta (former Georgia Southern & Florida, later Southern Railway), and CSX Transportation's line from Atlanta to Waycross (former Atlanta Birmingham & Coast, later Atlantic Coast Line). The convergence of these three lines makes for an unusual triple diamond arrangement, and the Cordele Railway Park offers visitors safe views of the movements. Historical markers at the park provide an overview of railroad history in the area. Tourist operation SAM Shortline also maintains a depot just blocks from the park.

Southern Farming

Farming is a way of life. There are stories woven through all aspects whether it be nine generations deep of legacy or three siblings taking over the operation. There are stories within it all. From the pecan groves of South Georgia to the cotton fields of West Tennessee, the sugar cane fields of Louisiana and back to the tobacco fields of Kentucky, GreenPoint Ag is committed to helping the growers across our 10-state footprint succeed. Agriculture is their passion. Their success is ours.
