he Alexander Railroad rostered a total of four end-cab switchers built by ALCO, the American Locomotive Company. Unusual among southeastern shortline rosters, three of these S-series motors served the line well for several decades. Unit #4 was purchased to replace the aging GE centercabs, but it proved too heavy for the Alexander's trackage at the time and was soon sold. Unit #5 worked the line for years, but was sold to an outfit in Kentucky who rebuilt the locomotive as a power car. It is derelict now, but its distinctively ALCO cab has been rescued and survives at the Southeastern Narrow Gauge & Shortline Museum. Wonderfully, two Alexander S-series movers survive in preservation, both still in the state of North Carolina. Unit #6 is operational at the Southeastern Narrow Gauge & Shortline Museum in Newton and bears the shortline's paint scheme; and Unit #7 has been repainted into an attractive Southern Railway livery at the Craggy Mountain Line outside Asheville.
