Rail Spike Park

Greenwood, Mississippi

rsp_leader

Greenwood, Ms / Jun 2020 / RWH

rsp_state egyptian ocated in Greenwood, Mississippi, the Rail Spike Park is a completed rails-to-trails project that follows the former Columbus & Greenville Railway mainline right-of-way through downtown. Running adjacent to Johnson Street, the trail stretches from Lamar Street — a block from the Amtrak station — out to the Highway 82 Bypass. Along the way, it passes the former Columbus & Greenville depot, still standing. The park was developed after 2000 when the C&G furloughed its mainline from Greenwood east to West Point. A new connection to the former Illinois Central mainline (now Canadian National) was built south of town, making the downtown trackage unnecessary. The trail has transformed the abandoned rail corridor into a multi-purpose path for bicycles and pedestrians. A modern pavilion was constructed by a local architecture firm for events and markets.

Rail Spike Park Pavilion, Greenwood, Mississippi

January 2020

The Rail Spike Park Pavilion is a 3,150-square-foot, multiuse gathering and event space. It was built as part of an overall conversion of an abandoned railway corridor.

The pavilion is situated along a primary entrance to downtown. Beard + Riser Architects PLLC designed it to reflect the utilitarian nature of the rail corridor, bordered by brick warehouses and industrial buildings, as well as agrarian gin buildings and tractor sheds common to the Mississippi Delta. Rail Spike Park Pavilion was constructed with steel framing clad in a combination of corrugated Galvalume, solid and perforated. Likewise, surrounding industrial buildings prevalently have corrugated metal for wall paneling and roofing. The pavilion’s distinct angular form and signage marks the entrance to the historic district.

To complete the project, Malouf Construction LLC installed 6,090 square feet of MBCI’s PBC corrugated metal wall panels in 26-gauge Galvalume Plus.
