typewriter he South Carolina Railroad Museum, Inc. was established in 1973 by a group of dedicated railroad enthusiasts from the Columbia and Charleston, South Carolina areas. In October 1983, the Museum received by way of donation the former Rockton and Rion Railway located in Fairfield County, South Carolina from Martin Marietta Aggregates. Then began the long and difficult process of reconstruction. The Museum named the line the Rockton, Rion and Western Railroad (RR&W).

South Carolina Railroad Museum

rrwx_state egyptian he South Carolina Railroad Museum is located in Winnsboro, in upstate South Carolina, north of Columbia and south of Charlotte. Established in 1973 by regional rail enthusiasts, the mission of the museum is to preserve and interpret the history of railroading in the Palmetto state. In 1983 the museum significantly expanded its presence with the acquisition of the 12 miles of former Rockton & Rion Railway trackage — a historic South Carolina shortline known for hauling sand and gravel until 1981. Seasonal train rides are offered over 5 miles of that right of way, extending to the west from the museum grounds. The operation is known as the Rockton, Rion & Western Railroad. The core of the museum's historic rolling stock collection came in the 1990s from the Charleston Chapter of the National Railroad Historical Society. The collection includes the Hampton & Branchville #44 Baldwin locomotive and tender, several diesel-electric switchers, heavyweight and commuter passenger cars, and various freight cars and cabooses. The museum is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and offers train rides, railroad events, and self-guided tours.

typewriter rains are a very important part of South Carolina history. My hometown of Florence was built around the railroad depot and Spartanburg's nickname of Hub City came from the railroad hubs there. Stumphouse Tunnel is the railroad tunnel through a mountain whose construction was interrupted by the Civil War and never finished. Several towns have their own museums dedicated to trains, but Winnsboro is home to the South Carolina Railroad Museum, lovingly staffed by volunteers who take their preservation and education roles seriously. From the moment you arrive, you can feel their enthusiasm for trains and local history.

egyptian he Rockton and Rion Railway was a shortline railroad operating freight service in Fairfield County, South Carolina, until its abandonment in 1981. Developed in 1897, it served as the railroad for the Winnsboro Granite Company. From a connection with the Southern Railway at Rockton, the line served Anderson Quarry and hauled sand, gravel, and raw materials. The railroad's entire 12-mile right-of-way is now owned by the South Carolina Railroad Museum, which has rebuilt some of the railroad and currently operates on 5 miles of the line.
