Durbin & Greenbrier Valley Railroad New Tygart Flyer |

DESTINATION: HIGH FALLS OF CHEAT
A very comfortable, climate-controlled excursion that features two separate mountain grades, an "S" curve tunnel, passage into a 1,500 feet deep canyon with steep, densely forested slopes, and a high bridge over the meandering Shavers Fork of the Cheat River.
This vintage diesel-powered passenger train has gained a reputation as one of the most relaxing mountain wilderness excursions in our Mountain Rail Adventures portfolio. The 4-hour, 46 mile round trip departs at 11 a.m. from the restored Elkins Depot on Railroad Avenue.
The trip culminates at the High Falls of Cheat, an 18′ high, 150′ wide waterfall located in one of the most remote and pristine settings in the region. If you're looking for comfort and spectacular views on a vintage train this is the ride for you!

On a railfan safari down through the center of West Virginia, I rolled into Elkins on a Friday morning just in time to catch the New Tygart Flyer pulling back from the station, backing through their wye, and heading out eastward toward Cheat Falls. Despite its grand name, the leisurely pace of the Flyer means you can chase her from crossing to crossing without too much trouble. I set off east from Elkins and scoped out a series of grade crossings along the river and below the main highway. The two covered wagons in Western Maryland dress up looked right at home curving in and out of every holler. Good for the Durbin & Greenbrier Valley folks, keeping these first generation movers alive and well and making money. And speaking of paying passengers, a number of them seemed to get a kick out of finding me at every successive crossing. Where's Waldo?
