The GP-40 was the first locomotive on the B&O with a 3000 horsepower engine and alternator. The GP-40s that were purchased by the B&O were equipped with the rate of change wheel slip, which was developed by B&O Chief Electrical Engineer, C.M. Machin. This system detected wheel slips by the rate of current flow to the traction motors, rather than by a predetermined voltage difference. The GP-40s had a narrow cab unit and all were geared for 65 miles per hour.

The No. 3684 was the very first of the 380 EMD model GP-40 locomotives placed in service by the B&O in November 1966. The B&O had the largest fleet of GP-40s in the country. They were versatile locomotives and could handle both manifest and heavy tonnage trains as well as hopper cars over poor mine trackage. The No. 3684 was later renumbered as CSX No. 6500 and repainted in CSX's blue and grey. In 1994, the B&O Railroad Museum returned the No. 3684 to its original B&O paint scheme. In 2006, it was restored once again by museum restoration staff.

The B&O No.7402 SD-35 was built by the General Motors, Electro-Motive Division (GM-EMD) in 1964. General Motors built 360 of these diesel locomotives between June 1964 and January 1966, 24 of which were purchased by the B&O in 1964. The SD-35 had a 3000 gallon fuel tank and a boxy appearance with a short underframe.

The B&O SD-35s were assigned to helper service to push trains up the steep grades of the Allegheny Mountains until they were replaced with the SD-50s. The No. 7402 was eventually renumbered as No. 4550 by CSX and was stored at the Queensgate Yard in Cincinnati, Ohio after its retirement. When the Baltimore & Ohio Railroad Museum acquired the No. 4550, the locomotive was painted in the Chessie System paint scheme. In 1995, the No. 4550 was restored and repainted to its original livery and road number.

The FM H-12-44 was a yard switcher produced by Fairbanks-Morse from May, 1950 – March, 1961. The units featured a 1,200-horsepower (890 kW), six-cylinder opposed piston engine prime mover, and were configured in a B-B wheel arrangement mounted atop a pair of two-axle AAR Type-A switcher trucks, with all axles powered and geared for a top speed of 60 miles per hour (97 km/h).

milw_inset A total of 303 units were built for American railroads, 30 were manufactured (between August 1951 to June 1956) by the Canadian Locomotive Company for use in Canada, and 1 unit was exported to Mexico. Initially, H-12-44s were visually indistinguishable from their predecessor model, the FM H-10-44. However, beginning in September, 1952 the Raymond Loewy design elements were removed as a cost-saving measure: cab lines were squared-off, the slanted-nose styling was discontinued, and the roof visor was eliminated. The following year, the fairing over the battery box was removed and louvers added to reduce the possibility of battery explosions. None of the units were produced between May and October 1956, after which time the carbodies were shortened by some three feet and outfitted with a deeper side skirt. Sixteen intact examples of the H-12-44 are known to survive today, all of which are owned by railroad museums or historical societies.
