In May of 1972, at the time of the Illinois Central Gulf merger, GM&O contracted with Railway Supply Company of Montgomery, Al, to re-power 4 of its aging RS1 motors. RSC retained the familiar Alco carbody but replaced to tired Alco prime movers with short-block Electro Motive Division 12-cylinder 567 engines taken from retired E units. The only external difference by which these locos could be identified as "rebuilt" was the modified exhaust manifold arrangement on top of the long hood. All four units officially went on the new ICG roster, but not for long. All went to dealer Precision National Corporation by 1975: 1 was sold to an industrial; 3 were scrapped by the end of that year.
