    Steamer #509

Central of Georgia steamer #509 was delivered from Baldwin Locomotive Works in Philadelphia as CofG #1709, the last unit in a first batch of 10 Consolidations erected in 1906 -- first portion of a group of 2-8-0's the Central would classify as C-4. With the rest of her class, she was later renumbered to 509 (in 1925) and upgraded with Walshaerts valve gear, piston valves, and a superheater. The steamer was donated to the City of Macon in 1959 and placed on display in Central City Park, where she remains today, in need of cosmetic restoration.

The first Central of Georgia Consolidations arrived from Baldwin as early as 1887 and were placed in freight service between Birmingham and Columbus. These "C" class locomotives had 50 inch drivers adn soon were keeping company with the "C-1" class (55 inch driving wheels) which were our-shopped by Cooke between 1901 and 1903. Beginning in 1904, Baldwin supplied 38 additional Consolidations. These came with 57 inch drivers and were dubbed class "C-2." They were followed by yet another larger Baldwin batch during 1906 and 1907 which were designated class "C-3." The last Consolidations, class "C-4", also came from Baldwin. Although delivered during the same general time frame (1906-1907) they were some 10,000 pounds heavier than the C-3 class. Numbered 500-524, this class all eventually received superheaters and piston valves. In later years, they were assigned to variou branch line operations as well as to heavy terminal switching duties and lasted until the end of steam.
