Central of Georgia Equipment Scrapbook |
My father seemed to have a soft spot in his railfan heart for the venerable Central of Georgia. He collected several books on the road and picked up roster shots at train shows. Maybe it was his love for mid-century passenger trains; the Central handled some impressive through hauls between Chicago and the Florida markets. Maybe it was their modern approach to nearly everything: a "progressive" railroad, ahead of its time in the otherwise sleepy South. Or maybe he liked the Central of Georgia because, in the end, the road became a core southeastern element of the Southern Railway he loved so much. Dad was too late to the Central to make any black & whites of their indigenous paint schemes, but he did manage to catch a few CofG units wearing the post-1965 Southern tuxedo scheme as they began to wander all over the southeast -- including our home in Huntsville, Al. So what follows here in barely a surface-scratch of Central equipment; more like a little scrapbook of power and rolling stock that crossed paths with the old man during his early camera years.
