Georgia State Railroad Museum

Train Ride Tour

The Georgia State Railroad Museum offers a short train ride over the grounds of the museum using one of its operating locomotives and a home-built replica passenger car. The short train is assembled in the roundhouse area using the operating turntable. Passengers are loaded near the museum's gift shop, then the train is turned on the turntable and aligned for the first of two short stretches of track. After plying the first siding, the train is aligned for the second route and patrons are taken to the other side of the property into the former Paint Shop building. Throughout the ride, docent interprets the history of the grounds, the buildings, and the equipment. Upon returning, the train is again aligned for the unloading area on the turntable. Typical power for the train is one of two operating General Electric 44 ton switchers. The open-air passenger car was built on site using a flat car base. The carbody was designed to resemble historic Central of Georgia coach #2 in the museum's collection.
