Tourist Steam
Many a boiler-on-wheels have survived the scrapper's torch in the last five decades thanks to the insistance of tourist railroad operators and museum maintainers (with rails for running) that steam power be preserved for subsequent generations. Today's railfan and his children are indebted to those tourist lines and curators who continue to take on the additional expense and hassle of maintaining aging kettles, especially in an age of increased liability concerns and greater anxiety over the bottom line. The trouble remains worthwhile, as nothing beats the smell of combustable soft coal coupled to the sound of valve cutoff. This page highlights the steamers in our photographic collection that either have operated or are currently operating in tourist or museum service.
